Rochelle and Gabe talked about the party all the way back to Rochelle’s apartment.

“You promise you had a good time?” Gabe asked.

“Are you kidding? My face hurts from smiling so much. I can’t remember the last time I had that much fun.”

Gabe grabbed Rochelle’s hand and kissed it. “I love that you got to meet everyone.”

“Me too.” She sighed happily. “I’ve lived here for almost a year, and up until now, it only felt like an extended visit. Tonight, it started to feel like a home. A real home. Something I’ve never really had.”

Gabe made a soft, contented sound. “That means everything to me, Rochelle.”

When they got to her apartment, Gabe walked her to the door. Rochelle was afraid her knees would give out on her the entire way.

Not trusting her voice, she signed, “Come in?”

Gabe’s eyes flashed. He looked her over from head to toe and back again. “You want me to?”

She nodded, then unlocked and opened the door.

The moment they were inside, Gabe caught her up in his arms, picking right up where they’d left off on the couch. He alternated between hard kisses and soft brushes of his lips over her jaw, her throat, her collarbone.

“You look so incredibly sexy in that dress,” he growled into her ear. “I couldn’t keep my eyes off you all night.”

She waited for him to sweep her up and carry her into the bedroom—it’s what she’d been fantasizing about all night. Oh, who was she kidding—she’d had that dream all her life. To have a man focus solely on her, to lose his mind at the thought of making love with her. Great dress or not, she could forgive Gabe for tearing it off her.

Isn’t that what book boyfriends did?

“Bedroom’s that way,” she said. “End of the hall.”

Gabe groaned. “Rochelle, I’ve never felt this way about any woman. I was always quick to rush into a relationship, because deep down, I knew it wouldn’t last. It was never right. “This,” he gestured between them, “feels absolutely right.” He grinned. “Believe me when I say I want to sleep with you. God, how I want to see which words you’ve learned in ASL,” he added, his grin turning lascivious as his gaze heated. “But I want to make sure you’re ready. Because once I start down this road, I’m not turning back. I want everything with you.”

“I want that, too. I’m not afraid if that’s what’s stopping you,” she said.

He clasped her hand in his, brought it to his lips, and kissed her knuckles.

“I know. It’s not that. I’m not making excuses, it’s exactly what I said. I guess what I’m saying is that I want to build a relationship with you, as old-fashioned as that is. I’ve never had that chance. I went into the military straight out of high school, and then into the Rangers as soon as I could. That didn’t allow for much in the way of real relationships, just hookups that turned convenient. Things are different now.”

He brushed his thumb across her cheek.
